DONATION PROCEDURES IN LIONISM - Sid L. Scruggs, III Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation
Dear Lions,
I would like to share with you some exciting changes to our donation procedures that will enable us to help even more people. Many of you have shared with your Board of Trustees and me interesting ideas for expanding giving opportunities to our Foundation. As a result, you can now choose from five general categories to designate your donations and receive Melvin Jones Fellowship recognition for each donation:
Area of Greatest Need: Donations in this category will support all program areas and allow LCIF the flexibility to supplement initiatives where additional funding is necessary or where the need is most urgent.
Disaster: Donations designated here enable LCIF to direct the funds to the areas most in need following disasters in order to provide for immediate, mid and long-term relief.
Sight: Donations here seek to support hundreds of sight-related activities ranging from equipping eye clinics to providing Braille computers for the visually impaired.
Youth: Donations in this category support the Lions Quest program and other initiatives such as educational infrastructure improvements and programs to assist at-risk youth.
Humanitarian Needs: Donations here will fund projects that meet diverse community needs beyond sight, disaster and youth, such as the measles program, water wells and vocational training programs for the disabled.
I know you will agree with me that these positive changes will help LCIF to provide aid to even more people in need around the world. These changes are effective immediately for all future donations. Donating is as easy as before - details on each program can be found online.
I thank you for your continued support.
Serving today for a better tomorrow,
Sid L. Scruggs, III

LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION SUPPORTS THE MEASLES INITIATIVE WITH GRANT FROM THE BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION
“I am extremely pleased with the initiative by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and I am working towards getting this assistance for District 411B”, District Governor Lion Satish Sharma echoed over the weekend. His excitement will indeed bring fruits for the vaccination drive required in Uganda and Tanzania.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted via droplets from the nose, mouth and throat of infected persons. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), during 2001-2008, global measles mortality declined by 78 percent, from an estimated 733,000 deaths in 2000 to 164,000 in 2008, but the reduction in measles mortality has been levelling off since 2007. Although vaccinations are readily available in developed countries, the disease remains a heavy public health burden in the developing world. The disease is also a major cause of preventable blindness, particularly among children, affecting the same underserved populations.
Involvement from Lions will focus on three main areas: advocacy at the local, regional and national levels; direct involvement in social marketing and vaccination activities; and financial support. Ethiopia, Madagascar, Mali and Nigeria will host the first four pilot programs. Lions’ leadership teams in the four pilot countries will coordinate, with Ministries of Health and other Measles Initiative partners, the program implementation and documentation of activities through the beginning of 2011.
PLAY FOR SIGHT - MZIZIMA SAY WE HAVE OUR VISION AND WE WANT YOU NOT TO LOSE YOUR VISION
Six months of hard labour finally yielded dividends. Mzizima achieved a record collection of over TShs 75 million in this year’s Play For Sight Golf Tournament held at Dar Gymkhana on 19th of November 2011.

The 18 Hole Gold tournament attracted over hundred golfers who themselves also contributed to the worthy causes lions are known for.
The sponsors who come in from diverse fields like banks, insurance companies, building companies, industries, even shopkeepers and individuals were the reason for this mega success.
The tournament teed off at 9.am and the golfers competed till late in the evening. During the presentation ceremony the president of Mzizima Lion Pratish Kakkad recognised the high standards displayed during the event. District Sight First Convenor Lion Shanti Shah added colour to the proceedings.
Optometrist Fatema Dalal, daughter of a Lion was awarded a token of appreciation for her exemplary services with Mzizima Club.
Lastly the presentations concluded with the Dar Gymkhana Secretary applauding the Lions and assuring continued support in years to come.
The vote of thanks was carried out by Mzizima’s flamboyant Lion Talib Yusufali Who recognised the man behind the golf tournament success, his son Akil Yusufali - the brainwave since three years ago who determinedly led the club to such heights.

1ML TREES IN KENYA BY 2012
A few weeks ago President Lion Win-Kun Tam had the pleasure of attending a ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya, where more than 2,000 trees were planted by Lions and representatives of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
To quote Lion Tam, "these trees are just the beginning of a new partnership between Lions and the AKDN that will result in the planting of at least one million trees in Kenya by December 2012. Think of it -- our entire worldwide goal for tree planting equaled in one nation alone!"
Lion Tam further mentioned that the activity was certainly a cause for celebration, not only because it would provide great environmental benefits, but also because growing and nurturing those trees will provide employment opportunities for young Kenyans.
The entire ceremony was also attended by Multiple Council Chairperson Lion Shem Bageine, District Governor Lion Satish Sharma and 2nd VDG Lion Ndesanjo. Lion Satish was overjoyed with the opportunity to meet international leaders and Prince Aga Khan.

DRINKING WATER AT MNAZI MMOJA SCHOOLS BY MZIZIMA CLUB
The school Head teachers of Mnazi moja Primary and Secondary schools approached us with the dreadful news that they have a total strength 1500 pupils and staff, were without a drop of water for the past 4 years. The pupils had to cross Lumumba st and travel all the way to the local Masjid to fetch water for sanitation purposes on daily basis.
We visited the school on 3rd October to personally witness just to find the conditions of the school deplorable. No drinking water and the toilets were beyond limits for any human.
However our expert in drilling bore holes was vigilant enough to point out that there were already two wells in the compound.
We immediately reverted to the head teachers for explanation as to why the same were not being utilized? To which they reported that they were under the control of the local government and was under lock. We asked them to contact them promising them resumption of water supply.
They took the initiative and the matter was resolved only to find everything in the shed stolen.Ironically the name plate during its opening was intact.
The next day the Lions went into action, hiring personnel and machinery and personally supervised the proceedings and further to that the schools were promised safe filtration plants to avail them with drinking water directly from the dispensers. The project was staged as:
Total Expense was 8,770,000/= for both schools.
- the flushing of the wells clearing them of all impurities. The laying of all pipe fittings over a distance of almost 150 mts,
- the building of state of the art dispensers. The attachment of Latest filters attached to two 2,000 litre tanks.
- The piping and sanitation fittings fixed to the staff toilets. Special exterior supply of water to other facilities.
- further planning to plant 100 fruit trees in the compound at the cost of TShs 500,000.
Total Expense was 8,770,000/= for both schools.
His excellency the Mayor will preside at the opening at a date to be announced after completion of piping.
Meanwhile the pictures will speak for themselves.
The School in general was overwhelmed with joy
