21 HEART PATIENTS FLY TO INDIA FOR SURGERY
Twenty-one patients with various heart problems were flown to India on 26th February for subsidized Open Heart Surgery treatment at Fortis Escorts Heart Hospital in New Delhi.
Dr Rajni Kanabar, the district convenor of Open Heart Surgery for Lions Club Dar es Salaam Host, said the patients are expected to come back after three weeks, following what is expected to be successful surgery.
“We are pleased to announce that Lions Club of Dar-es-Salaam Host in collaboration with Regency Medical Centre and the Ministry of Health, Zanzibar will be sending a group of 21 heart patients and 10 escorts including one escorting doctor,” he said before having sent the patients.
Twenty patients are from Zanzibar and one patient from Arusha, he said, paying particular gratitude to IPP Executive Chairman Reginald Mengi for sponsoring 10 patients in the group.
In the group the youngest patient is seven-month old Sinani Maliha Makame with a trial and ventricular septal defects (two holes in the partition of upper and lower chambers of the heart), and the oldest patient is a 69 year old suffering coronary heart disease.
Escorts Heart Hospital is a world renowned cardiac centre of excellence offering subsidized rates for heart surgery to Tanzania heart babies under the Lions banner.
The cost of each heart surgery, irrespective of complications and duration of stay, is US$ 2000 and extra valve or stent is charged extra. The upkeep of the patient and mother for three weeks is put at US$ 600.
“Special thanks to Mr. Reginald Mengi for sponsoring the heart surgery of 10 patients. He has also donated 50 heart surgeries to mark the 50th anniversary of independence, and also 100 heart surgeries in the past five years, the Ministry of Health, Zanzibar for sponsoring six heart patients, as well as the Indian High Commission, Lions Club of Arusha, Emirates Airlines and Lion Shiraz Rashid,” said Dr Kanabar.
He said that this is a golden opportunity for Tanzanian heart children with congenital heart defects and rheumatic valvular heart diseases to get them operated at Fortis Heart Institute with the lowest subsidized rates for Heart Surgery. The rates are USD.2000 for heart surgery, USD 600 for upkeep and USD 1200 for extra heart valve.
He also wished that the Union Ministry of Health and Social Welfare would join in this boat of service so that more children can be operated with limited finances.

Times are Hard by Lion Shabbir Jamnagerwalla
Times are hard and knocking us flat,
Life has become much aggressive,
And it has become dearer,
The clock seems much faster,
We dig deeper into our Pockets,
We curb our expenditure,
Yet the inflation is much felt,
When we get our month end Salary Pay,
We realize our helplessness,
And find that we have been spending from our Savings,
Before long there is no balance left,
And we start the new month with an Advance,
But my Friends, swim along with the Times,
And like the Duck above, float and float,
Do not let yourself be drowned,
Under the strains of employment,
Just float with the tide of our Times!
